I'm a big fan of the Hannibal TV show and felt inspired to try something different to what I have done previously. Its pretty gory and not everyone's taste at all; I fully expect a few people telling me how disgusting it is, but it was a horror shoot so as long as its not deemed too offensive then I am ok with scaring a few viewers!
I had a few ideas that started with antlers (those familiar with the show will know the reference there), but with them being difficult to get, or very expensive, I decided to change tact. I managed to find a amazing and very convincing supply of fake blood - (from bloody marvelous) and once I tested it I knew the potential for this shoot was there. The character of Hannibal Lecter is a cannibalistic serial killer, but I wanted to twist on this by having the subject be female and a little more curious than Hannibal's usual confident and assured style.
The next step was getting everything to be as realistic as possible, I find that if you use fake products and props you can usually tell they are fake - despite the photoshop work; so I made a call and my local butchers was able to offer me a pigs heart. Now, I wasn't doing this to make any political points or upset any vegetarians or vegans, but I was really set on this resulting in the best shots I could get, so if you are offended by the images then I apologise, but know that it wasn't my desire to annoy you!
Sammy Carpenter is a fantastic makeup artist and does some really phenomenal work, but as its usually beauty-based and this was far from it, I was worried she might not be as keen to participate - but she certainly was! Sammy came on board with so many great ideas and really did a awesome job on the night too - not just getting things setup, but adding the blood as we went and helped with ideas for posing and angles for me to shoot from.
Shawna was a star, she stepped in quite late on, and although was slightly concerned about holding a real heart (apparently she has a fear of veins!), she threw away any hesitations she might have had and literally grabbed the opportunity with both hands! Shawna is fast becoming a wonderful model and I have been lucky to get the chance to shoot with her before she goes onto bigger and better things, she's got a wonderful sense of humor and really is passionate about making every shoot work.
As you can see we got some great shots and we were all so happy with the results - at the bottom of the page are the shots in a complete pdf format to view.
